Rick Mast - Snake Eyes at Vegas
If they were tossing dice at one of the many gaming tables throughout the city of Las Vegas, then collectively the Big Daddy’s BBQ Sauce and Spices Racing Team and driver Rick Mast would have rolled snake eyes this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Mast and the Larry Hedrick team failed to earn a starting spot in Sunday’s CarsDirect.com 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Mast stood 38th at the conclusion of first round time trials Friday, a scant .019 second slower than 36th place Dave Blaney. Nevertheless, Mast was forced to make another qualifying attempt during second round qualifying Saturday morning. Only the top 36 cars earned a starting berth based on speed and, unfortunately, the Larry Hedrick Motorsports team was not high enough in owner’s points from the previous season to receive a provisional starting position.
“We’ve worked on the car a lot, but we’re still way, way off,” Mast said after turning in a lap of 32.140 seconds, 168.015 mph in first round qualifying. “The Big Daddy’s BBQ Sauce and Spices Chevrolet handled good through the corners, but I think we’ve missed the boat on some shocks and stuff. All the guys who came out to Las Vegas and tested have it working. I think that’s hurt us.”
Mast didn’t fare any better during second round qualifying Saturday. Battling a significantly slower race track than the day before, Mast’s lap of 32.406 seconds, 166.636 mph was not fast enough to break into the starting field. Other drivers who did not qualify at Las Vegas were Brett Bodine, Dave Marcis, Mike Bliss, Ed Berrier, and Austin Cameron.
