Ron began his racing career at an early age racing go-karts in the WKA National Dirt Series. At the of 17, Ron moved up to race Late Model Stock Cars at Myrtle Beach Speedway he won two back-to-back Championships.

From there, he moved to the NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series in 1994 where he won the Texas Pete Rookie of the Year Title and finished 4th overall. In 1995, he finished 3rd in the same series.

In 1996, Ron went to drive a mixture of Supertruck, ARCA, Busch and Winston Cup Races for Bill Elliott, out of Dawsonville, GA. He won his first race for Bill in the ARCA series at Michigan International Speedway, and went on to have several more top 10 and top 5 finishes in the Supertruck, ARCA and Busch Grand National Divisions.

Ron went on to drive again for Bill Elliott in 1997, where he ran a limited Busch schedule and competed in the 1997 Brickyard 400 where he ended up finishing 21st in his first ever Winston Cup Race.
