Ron Hornaday followed his father, Ron Sr., a former NASCAR Winston West Series Champion, to a NASCAR modified stock car title at Saugus (CA) Speedway. He's the only two-time NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour champion and is No. 1 in money won and No. 2 in all-time victories there. Hornaday was hired by Teresa Earnhardt to drive her Chevrolet after national acclaim in NASCAR Winter Heat, a TNN-televised package from Tucson Raceway Park. Hornaday came out strong in 1995, winning six races and four Busch Poles, but finished third in the final championship standings behind Mike Skinner and Joe Ruttman. The tour's sophomore campaign was a championship season for the DEI team, as Hornaday won six races and posted 23 top-10 finishes. All but one of those runs was a lead-lap effort, as Hornaday won on short track, superspeedway and road course. Last season's championship defense began with an accident at Walt Disney World Speedway and, despite seven victories, culminated in a disappointing - by Hornaday's standards - fifth-place championship finish. Still Hornaday became the tour's all time win and No. 2 money-won leader and, with Mike Bliss, just two competitors to win in all three seasons with the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Son Ron III began competing regularly on NASCAR speedways in North Carolina and figures to follow his father and grandfather as championship competitors in the years ahead. The Hornadays enjoy water sports on Lake Norman.
