VON SMITH GETS A RARE SECOND ROUND DEPARTURE AT WORLD NATIONALS NORWALK, OHIO -- The Big Daddy's BBQ Sauce & Spices Funny Car of two-time IHRA World Champion Von Smith is a regular guest in the final round of IHRA competition. When it is not there, that makes news. At the IHRA Mopar Parts World Nationals presented by Ethanol Performs!, Smith was defeated in round two by a fellow Big Daddy's Funny Car IHRA World Champion, Mark Thomas. After getting by Larry Dobbs in round one with his best ET of the weekend, a 5.900 at 235.31 MPH, Smith's performance fell off in round two. Despite an incredible .413 light, Smith could not get around Mark Thomas, losing 6.018/233.96 to 5.948.74. Smith losing margin was just 16 inches, or four thousandths of a second! "Mark had a good race car this weekend and ours just did not perform in round two," said Smith, owner of Atomic City Tools in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. "We'll just have to load up and go to Epping and defend our win there from last year." In other Big Daddy's BBQ Sauces & Spices news, the company announced the formation of the Big Daddys BBQ Funny Car Shootout for 2000. This event will be held at the 2000 Mopar Parts World Nationals at drivers will compete for $20,000 to win, $10,000 runner-up, $5,000 Semi-finalists and $2,500 quarter-finalists. The company will be the title rights sponsor to the class and will award $1,000 to the quickest qualifier at each event. The next IHRA event for the 2-time World Championship Big Daddy's BBQ Sauce & Spices Pontiac Firebird will be the PARTS PRO North American Nationals, Sept. 10-12 at New England Dragway in Epping, NH. Big Daddy's BBQ Sauce & Spice Funny Car qualifying is set to begin Friday, Sept. 10 with two qualifying sessions. The final two sessions will conclude Saturday, Sept. 11 with the last session during the IHRA trademark 'Night of Fire.' Final elimination's are scheduled to begin, Sunday, Sept. 14 at 12 noon. The Mopar Parts World Nationals presented by Ethanol Performs! will air on ESPN2, Friday, Sept. 15th at 1:30p.m. EDT The one-hour long show will be replayed Thursday, Sept. 23rd at 2:30 a.m. Additional coverage of the event can be seen on IHRA's weekly television show, Inside Drag Racing, seen weekly on ESPN2.
