Gill Wins at Montgomery Motor Speedway Defending USAR Hooters ProCup Series Champion Sweeps Alabama

FAYETTEVILLE, GA. (September 17, 2000) - After rebounding from his first finish outside of the top-10 in six races last time out, 1999 USAR Hooters ProCup Series champion Bobby Gill returned to victory lane Saturday night. 

Gill took the lead on lap 209 and remained out front to win the Naturally Fresh 250 presented by Food World. Gill outdistanced Mardy Lindley with Clay Rogers, Mike Laughlin, Jr. and Steven Christian completing the top-five.

Gill was obviously happy after getting the win, but mentioned in post-race ceremonies that he thought the night was going to be a challenge from the opening moments. "We had some problems getting the car going at the start of the race," said Gill. "I thought it was going to be a long night but we got things worked out."

The race featured six different leaders, with Gill leading the most laps (137) while getting his first win since he ended his four-race winning streak at New River Valley Speedway in July. "It was good to get back to here [victory lane]," said Gill. "Steve ]Dluzniewski] and the guys made a good call to pit for the last two tires and we were able to get by Jeff [Agnew] with newer tires there near the end."

The red flag was thrown on lap 182 when a crewman for Jon Kerley was injured while working on the car during a pit stop. The race was restarted on lap 190 with Gill running sixth and concerned for a moment.

"We were concerned during the red flag," said Gill. "We just hoped the car would restart and thankfully it did." The race was slowed 13 times for caution mainly due to single-car
incidents. The final caution flag was given to the field on lap 239 when Mario Gosselin, Jimmy McClain and Kerley got together in turn four. The caution set up a three-lap dash to the finish which Gill won.

Bill Plemons, Jr. won the Discount Auto Parts Pole with a record time of 20.333 seconds (97.379 mph) and finished sixth, while veteran driver Don Satterfield finished seventh for his first top-10 finish since a fourth-place finish at Ace Speedway in April. Agnew finished eighth, the last car on the lead lap, while David Pletcher and Hal Goodson completed the top-10.

Rogers won the Miller Lite Rookie of the Race award and also led at the halfway mark to collect the Lucas Oil Products Halfway Leader bonus. Keith Montgomery enjoyed his first top-15 finish in the Hooters ProCup Series and also won the State Fair Brand Hard Charger award. 

The USAR Hooters ProCup Series returns to action this Saturday night when Greenville-Pickens Speedway hosts the Hooters 250 Dan Duncan Memorial presented by Aloe Lu-Ya. The race will be of special significance to the two drivers who are eligible to win Four Champions Challenge Series bonus of $25,000 if they can make it to victory lane. Mardy Lindley, with his win at Myrtle Beach Speedway, and Bobby Gill, from his win at Montgomery in June are qualified for the bonus if a driver can win any two of the Four Champions Challenge Series events. NEWS & NOTES FROM MONTGOMERY MOTOR SPEEDWAY

• Brian Vickers collected his worst finish (39th) of the season when the motor on his Food World Chevy broke on lap 19. The finish dropped 16 year-old Vickers from the top spot in the battle for the Miller Lite Rookie of the Year race. Vickers also dropped from third to sixth in the overall points standings.

• Hooters ProCup Series veteran Tim Clayton raced despite battling the flu all day long and was running in the top-10 until mechanical problems forced him out of the race just past the halfway mark of the race.

• Gill also tied a record for most wins in a season with his win. Michael Ritch set the seven wins mark in 1998.

• Jabe Jones enjoyed his best finish since the June race at Montgomery when he brought his Jackaroo Sauces car home in 11th place Saturday night.
